Is your Torrance attic ready for new insulation?

Attic insulation in Torrance is new material laid over your ceiling to slow heat and quiet outside noise, so the upstairs stays cooler in summer and the AC isn't running all afternoon. A good job checks the attic and seals the gaps before any of it goes in.

Most calls start with a hot upstairs, a drafty room over the garage or a power bill that won't come down. The price moves with the size of the attic, how many inches are already up there, how many gaps need sealing and whether the old stuff is clean enough to stay or needs insulation removal first. The schedule mostly turns on what I find, since a roof leak or old wiring gets fixed before anything goes on top of it. The estimate I write after seeing your attic gives you your own number.

How do you know your attic insulation isn't doing its job?

  • Upstairs stays hot

The bedrooms upstairs stay warm long after the sun goes down, even with the AC on. That usually means the attic is short on insulation or full of gaps, and every summer you wait, the AC works harder and the power bill shows it.

  • Joists showing through

Pop the hatch and look. If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, there isn't much left up there, and old material tends to settle thin at the edges first, right where the room below feels it.

  • Stains, smells or droppings

A water stain on the ceiling or droppings in the old insulation means something got in. New insulation over it just buries the problem, and the longer it sits, the more damp works into the framing.

  • Blown-in insulation

Loose fill that settles between the joists and into the odd corners that rolls of insulation tend to miss.

  • Home insulation

For when the hot rooms and drafts aren't only upstairs and the walls, floors or room over the garage need a look too.

How we do attic insulation

First I go up and look over the roof, the wiring and whatever's already in the attic, and if something needs fixing, the job waits, because insulation can't fix what it's covering. Old material that's soaked or full of droppings comes out instead of getting a fresh layer on top. Then the crew air seals, closing the gaps around can lights, pipes and the hatch, so the new insulation isn't fighting a draft. We keep the eave vents clear so the attic can still breathe, and we blow in loose fill through a hose as deep at the edges as in the middle, which is where most attics come up short. Steep sections get batts, because blown material won't stay put on a slope.

Most of the depth we add goes in as blown-in insulation, since it fills around joists and wiring better than anything cut to size. If the attic is only part of the story, home insulation covers the rest of the house.

  • Seal and top up with loose fill

This suits most attics where the ducts don't run through, and it's what I recommend most often. Sealing the gaps does the heavy lifting, and loose fill is the cheaper way to add depth on top.

  • Spray foam

Foam costs more, but it seals air while it insulates, so it earns its price when your ductwork lives up in the attic. Our spray foam insulation page covers how that job goes.

Why Torrance homeowners call SealPro Torrance Insulation Company for attic insulation

  • I write every estimate myself

I come out to look at every job and write the estimate myself, and a crew I trained does the install. I check their work before we leave, so the person who saw your attic is the one who signs off on it.

  • In business since 2017

This started with insulating neighbors' attics in Torrance on weekends, and the calls kept coming until it turned into the actual job. We're still based in Torrance and work in the cities around it.

  • We're licensed and insured

SealPro Torrance Insulation Company is licensed and insured. That's the baseline for anyone working over your ceiling and beside your wiring, so ask it of any contractor you're comparing.

  • We'll say if it's not worth it

Sometimes the attic already has plenty up there and the real problem is a leak or a draft somewhere else. I'd rather tell you that than sell you insulation you don't need.

The order matters more than the brand of insulation, so book an attic check and I'll show you what yours needs first.

What happens after you call about attic insulation in Torrance?

  1. Call or send a request

Call (424) 318-3075 or use the form, and we'll set a time for me to come out. Tell us what you're noticing, a hot room, a draft or a ceiling stain, so I know where to look first.

  2. I look and write the estimate

I go up and check the roof, the wiring and what's already in the attic, then write an estimate that lists what gets fixed first, what gets sealed and what goes in. You see every line before you agree to anything, including anything that's a job for a roofer or electrician.

  3. The crew installs, I check

The crew seals and insulates, then cleans up the attic and the path through your house. I go back up and check the edges and the vents before we call it finished.

Common questions

  • How much does attic insulation cost in Torrance and around Los Angeles?

Blown-in insulation in the Los Angeles area usually costs about $1,600 to $3,600 per project, which is what the market charges, not our price. Where your attic lands depends on its size, how much is already up there and how much sealing or cleanup comes first.

  • Is there a rebate for attic insulation in Torrance?

There may be if Southern California Edison is your utility, since its Home Performance Plus program lists an attic insulation rebate of $1.07 per square foot for blown-in insulation or batts. It's limited to homes under 3,000 square feet with certain heating and cooling setups, such as central AC with a gas furnace, so check the current terms on Edison's rebate page before you count on it.

  • Can new insulation go over old vermiculite in my attic?

Not until you've decided how to handle it, because EPA says to assume vermiculite may contain asbestos and to leave it undisturbed. If you choose removal, that's a separate job for a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor who isn't the one who assessed it. It looks like gray-brown or silver-gold pebbles, so mention it when you call.

  • Who is licensed to do attic insulation work in California?

California's Contractors State License Board lists a C-2 Insulation and Acoustical Contractor class for this kind of work. Unlicensed workers can only take jobs under $1,000, and only when the work needs no permit and they have no employees, so a full attic job usually runs past what they can take on.

  • What is the best way to insulate an existing attic?

Seal first, then insulate. Federal guidance for existing vented attics says to air seal every opening through the attic floor with sealant, spray foam or rigid blocking before insulating, so look for sealing as its own line on any estimate. If you have oil or gas appliances, ENERGY STAR suggests having a Home Performance Contractor test them before and after sealing, since in some cases a tighter house can send exhaust from naturally venting appliances back inside.

  • How do I know if my recessed lights can be covered with insulation?

Check whether the fixture has an IC rating, which means it's rated for contact with insulation. The usual practice is to keep insulation off heaters and any recessed lights without that rating, and if you're not sure, I'll check yours from the attic side when I come out.
